Rob Chang: Advancing Sustainable Bitcoin Mining

Rob Chang is revolutionizing the Bitcoin industry, known for its notoriously high energy costs. The mining process can take a heavy toll on the environment because of the significant computing power and electricity required to operate dedicated machines. As CEO of Gryphon Digital Mining, Chang is working to transform how the process operates, demonstrating that cryptocurrency mining and environmental responsibility do not necessarily have to be at odds. Chang decided to take the leap into the world of cryptocurrency after leaving the investment research world in 2018. With a robust background in finance, he brings extensive knowledge of capital markets, investment strategy, and emerging financial opportunities to the rapidly evolving digital asset sector.

Chang has also been frequently quoted by leading media outlets such as Bloomberg, Reuters, CNBC, and The Wall Street Journal. Prior to managing Gryphon Digital Mining, Chang served as Director of Research and Portfolio Manager at Middlefield Capital, a Canadian investment firm. Today, his work focuses on sustainable Bitcoin mining using 100 per cent renewable energy, including solar, wind, and hydro, with the goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations. His approach reflects a growing movement within the cryptocurrency sector to balance technological advancement with greater environmental accountability and more sustainable methods of operation.

How did you get into the field of cryptocurrency? Did you have a related background or experience?
I entered the cryptocurrency industry after deciding to leave the investment banking research world in 2018. At the time, I had spent more than 15 years covering the metals and mining sector, most recently serving as Managing Director and Head of Metals and Mining Research at Cantor Fitzgerald. Through professional contacts, I learned that Riot Blockchain—the first publicly traded Bitcoin mining company listed on Nasdaq—was searching for a CFO. The opportunity immediately captured my attention because it combined elements of finance, mining, technology, and innovation. While cryptocurrency was a relatively new industry, many of the analytical and financial skills I had developed throughout my career were highly transferable. It was an exciting chance to be part of a rapidly evolving sector that was beginning to attract significant institutional and investor interest.

What are the challenges you currently face in making digital mining environmentally sound? What innovative approaches are you having to take to address those challenges?
I think it’s just a smart use of capital and deploying in the right places. The number one impact, as everyone knows, is energy. We made the decision a few years ago — before Elon Musk made it popular, really — in terms of focusing our operations on 100 per cent carbon-free sources. Our locations are using hydropower primarily, and it’s carbon-free. On top of that, to be innovative and to lead the way, we also own carbon offset credits, which we don’t really need to use because our operations are carbon-free. However, we have that in our back pocket. So, I guess you could say, we’re a carbon-negative miner from that perspective. We can use those carbon credits to offset the carbon emissions from the machine deliveries, for example, or when we travel to go to conferences.

Despite market volatility, are you optimistic about the long-term future of digital mining and Bitcoin?
Absolutely. While market downturns often create uncertainty, I remain very optimistic about the long-term outlook for Bitcoin and digital mining. When you compare today’s values to where Bitcoin traded just a few years ago, the growth is still remarkable. Unlike traditional currencies, which can be affected by inflation and money supply expansion, Bitcoin has a fixed supply. As awareness and adoption continue to increase globally, I believe its long-term value proposition remains strong and attracts both individual and institutional interest. Market cycles are a natural part of any emerging asset class, and periods of volatility often create opportunities for innovation, investment, and broader participation within the ecosystem.

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for future Bitcoin adoption?
I believe some of the greatest opportunities exist in emerging markets, where access to traditional banking services can be limited. Today, many people may not have a bank account, but they do have access to a smartphone. That device can provide access to digital financial tools, including Bitcoin and
other cryptocurrencies. The ability to transact quickly, securely, and often at lower costs creates significant advantages. As digital connectivity expands worldwide, I expect adoption to accelerate, particularly in regions seeking greater financial accessibility and independence. For many individuals, digital currencies can provide an alternative way to participate in the global economy and access financial services that were previously out of reach.

What qualities or skills are most important for professionals entering the digital mining space today?
A strong foundation in finance and capital markets is incredibly valuable, but technical curiosity is equally important. The digital mining industry evolves rapidly, requiring professionals to stay informed and continuously develop new skills. Understanding energy economics, regulatory developments, operational efficiency, and emerging technologies can provide a significant advantage. Professionals also need to understand how global market conditions and shifts in energy availability can affect the economics of mining operations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential when navigating these complexities and evaluating new opportunities. Success in this sector comes from combining financial discipline with adaptability, critical thinking, and a willingness to embrace innovation in an environment that is constantly changing and creating new opportunities.

How do you see regulation shaping the future of cryptocurrency mining in North America?
Regulation will play a defining role in the industry’s future, and I view that as a positive development. Clear and consistent frameworks help build credibility, attract institutional investment, and provide greater confidence for businesses operating in the sector. Across North America, there is increasing attention on energy transparency, environmental responsibility, and financial disclosure. Companies that
proactively align with evolving standards will be better positioned to scale sustainably, strengthen stakeholder trust, and demonstrate long-term value to investors, regulators, and the broader market.

Looking ahead, what strategic priorities will be most critical for digital mining companies to remain
competitive?
Efficiency and disciplined capital allocation will continue to be major differentiators as the digital mining industry matures. Access to reliable, low-cost, and increasingly clean sources of energy will remain one of the most important competitive advantages. Companies must also continue investing in next-generation mining hardware and infrastructure to maximize productivity and maintain operational efficiency. Beyond technology, strong balance sheet management and careful financial planning will become even more important as market cycles continue to create volatility. I also believe that diversified revenue streams and strategic partnerships will play a larger role in long-term success. The companies that combine operational excellence, innovation, sustainability, and financial discipline will be best positioned to navigate changing market conditions and create lasting value for shareholders.
